20 Nick of Time

A numbness overtook Scott as the blows rained down on him. There was only so much a man could take. An underlying irony nagged him: he’d survived abduction, intergalactic travel, globules, shagarks, drowning… and now he would die at the hands of this… this monster.

Through puffed eyes and blurred vision, he saw Xero beside him, a bloody pulp but holding strong, still standing on his own power. Eigor wore an apron and long yellow gloves. The white cloth stained deep red. Scott’s ears rung from the slaps to the side of the head, and he could barely make out the words.

“Tell. Me. The. Way. You. Transport. Yourselves.” Each word punctuated by a punch to the stomach by one of the small but muscular helpers.

Xero grimaced but didn’t speak, a low rumble coming from within. Scott fared less well, all the strength drained from him, and he sagged in the chains, the shackles cutting into his wrists, biting the flesh. He couldn’t tell how long the beating had lasted. Minutes, hours, days? It all melded into a smorgasbord of pain and suffering, and Scott was full.

Eigor turned his attention from the Hürantån and addressed Scott. “What about you? Are you ready to talk yet?”

He shooed Ortiz away and looked right in Scott’s eyes. Despite being blurred, the sight of Eigor reviled him, and even though his nose was likely broken, the stench burned in his nostrils. The B.O. smelled like rotten food. Eigor opened his mouth to speak, and the bile, vomit-odour assaulted Scott’s nostrils.

“Tell me the location of the Plankton x-01987 file as well as that of your wife, Brooke. We will find her and kill her anyway, so why delay the matter? Tell me now, and I will kill you and put you out of your misery.”

Scott saw red. He mustered up anything left and spat in Eigor’s disgusting face. “Go to hell you bastard! I’ll never tell you where she is!”

“Very well,” Eigor mopped the spittle with his hanky, now a bloody mess. “Resume the persuasion, boys.”

The two small muscular minions moved in while Ortiz and Eigor stepped back and wiped their hands. The demons took turns striking Scott, beating the living daylights out of him. Each successive blow a torment. The numbness subsided, and each strike caused more and more pain. One to the gut, one to the head, one in the kidneys, a thunderclap to the ears, and one massive strike to the face. Bolts of searing white lightning flashed in Scott’s eyes.

A deafening ring clanged in his ears and dark red blood ran out the corner of his mouth. “Stop!” said Eigor. “You’re going to kill him. Give the other a shot.”

They stepped over to Xero and resumed his beating, and Scott indeed felt like he was about to die. He would never give up Brooke, but his hope drained like the blood from his many wounds. Inevitably, they would find her. If I give up and tell, will it do any good to still be alive? Or would they kill me as soon as I spill the beans? Probably the latter.
